YMCA sports programs build winners on and off the court.  At the Great Plains Family YMCA, we develop more than strong and athletic bodies; we develop an individual’s mind while instilling positive values like teamwork, honesty and fair play.  We have programs for all ages, interests and abilities.

We have room for everyone…youth and adults!  We provide an abundance of youth sports and a variety of programs for adults from drop-in sports to the competitive nature of our sports leagues.   At the Y we believe that “everyone plays, everyone wins,” and we demonstrate that in all we do.  Kids and adults feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment playing in YMCA sports programs!

It is the policy of the YMCA that no one is denied the benefit of program participation due to personal financial hardship.  If you are interested in a YMCA program and are in need of financial assistance, please contact the YMCA.

Youth Sports

A mainstay of YMCA offerings for young people, Y youth sports programs fill kids' youth_sports.jpgdiscretionary hours with positive activities and caring adult attention. Coaches -- often volunteers, including many parents -- emphasize teamwork and cooperation over winning at any cost, developing good values over developing the next superstar.

Basketball, a YMCA invention, is a popular youth program, as are soccer and swimming.  Other local options range from traditional sports like baseball and football to such newer inventions as blastball.

Blast Ball

Blast Ball is a fun and exciting introduction to T-ball for 3 and 4 year olds. This game teaches baseball fundamentals of hitting, running and fielding. There are fewer players on the field for more action and no score is kept. The main emphasis is on the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship. Co-ed teams will play two games per week and the season lasts two weeks. All games are played indoors at the YMCA. There are no formal field positions, plus the fair distance line marker and sideline cones designate fair territory. Each batter hits the ball past the fair distance marker and runs to the Blast-Base (a base that “Honks”). When a fielder stops the ball, he/she holds the ball and yells “Blast”. If the fielder yells “Blast” before the batter “Honks” the base, the batter is out. If the batter “Honks” the base before the fielder yells “Blast”, the batter scores a run.

Blast Ball is a teaching league, working with 3 & 4 year olds, so the Y will need as many volunteer coaches and helpers as possible. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Great Plains Family YMCA.
