Youth and Government
Selected high school students from the Great Plains community can participate in the prestigious YMCA Youth and Government Program. Students meet locally as well as meet in Oklahoma City at the State Capital and State Supreme Court buildings for their own model legislature under the YMCA’s Youth and Government program. Assuming roles of House members, they write and debate dozens of model bills and prosecute and defend a mock case in the Supreme Court. You will gain training in public speaking and parliamentary procedure.
YMCA Youth and Government gives high school students from around the state the opportunity to author legislation and debate it in the chambers of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, and it also allows students to be witnesses, attorneys, and judges in the Court of Criminal Appeals at the State Capitol. Since the beginning of the program, over 12,000 students have been involved with this unique leadership experience. Visit the Oklahoma Youth and Government website for more information (www.okymcayag.net/about.html).
